Description

The Story of the Plantation Pineapple Salt Scrub

Any guest who was invited to a party where a whole pineapple was displayed, knew that no expense was spared in guaranteeing the guests’ enjoyment. It was this that made the crowned fruit the high symbol of social events and became the meaning of welcome, friendship, and hospitality.

About

In 1860 Captain Ben Baker, a “wrecker ” was the first to start the Florida Keys farming industry with pineapples doing so in Plantation Key and Key Largo, near Carysfort Reef, where many ships ran aground. He would farm his pineapples at the same time as keeping a watchful eye out for a ship to run aground on the reef. Records show that Captain Ben would make as much as seven thousand dollars each summer from the sale of his pineapples, equivalent to more than $100,000 by today’s standards! Historians estimate that in the late 1800’s 85% of America’s pineapples were grown in the Florida Keys. WOW!

Today you can pass by locals’ yards still, proudly, growing and displaying their precious pineapples
